Joomla!

I realized that I have thus far successfully overlooked an apropos shout-out to the folks who created and maintain Joomla!.  Joomla! (their exclamation not mine) is the open-sources content management system that backs this website.  I started using joomla just out of passing curiosity, but quickly grew to appreciate how it's basic functionality, by means of its basic content heirarchy of section->category->article, nicely fit what I wanted to accomplish with yeastfarts.com  Essentially, I wanted to create a blog that looks and feels like more than a blog and Joomla handles this without effort (at least on my behalf).

Other highlights of the Joomla product are top notch documentation, highly active user community, and amazingly polished look and feel out of the box.  I've used drupal at work and other semi-CMSs like wikis and blogs and none that I've encountered come close to joomla's slickness-by-default.

That's disgusting

So as I've mentioned this website, specifically the name, to my friends I've gotten a mixture of reactions ranging from laughter to 'nicely appetizing name!'  I know the name is less than appealing without context.  I mean just do a google images search for 'yeast' (or don't if you value the stability of your most recent meal) and you'll see why yeast isn't always our friend.  So yeast can be gross, and nobody likes your farts except you...

However, in the context of brewing beer yeast farts are awesome.  When yeast eats all the lovely sugar in a brew it turns sugar into alcohol and CO2.  In homebrew that means all the mood altering goodness AND the tingly little bubbles of carbonation are thanks to yeasty beasties!  Moreover, I think one of the most exciting parts of brewing is the rush of seeing the bubbles come pouring through my fermentation lock when the yeast is at its most active.  This is a sign of good things to come, and it's accompanied by some fun smells.  I recently brewed a tripel and while the yeast was cranking away my beer closet smelled strongly of delicious bananas.  That brew turned out great and has some hints of fuit including banana, so I'm reminded of those initial smells that indicated some characteristics of the end product.

Needless to say I would be reluctant to undertake the creation of any other website called whateverfarts.com, but yeast farts are one variety of flatulence that I can get behind.

Cheers!

Get a YeastFarts T-shirt

In a beautiful example of putting the cart before the horse, I've create a cafepress shop for yeastfarts.com.  I uploaded a version of my "I [heart] YeastFarts" logo and threw it on a men's and women's dark colored t-shirt.  There's no markup on the shirts, so I get nothing from the sale of the shirts except the pride of knowing there are other lovers of beer who appreciate my silly slogan.

Mmm Beer!

E-mail Print PDF

I've created Yeastfarts.com with a mind to share what I know about beer.  For starters I'll be writing about my own adventures in beer- drinking, brewing, and learning.  A few months ago I starting homebrewing, and that's led me to learn a lot more about beer than I used to know.  I've been blown away by how much information there is on the subject, and I'm keenly aware that I'm far from an expert.  Nonetheless, I feel like I've got some knowledge to share, so that's where this website comes into play.  I hope you find this site useful!

Cheers!
