A sad day in my brewing history

E-mail Print PDF

Today I dumped a 5-gal batch of beer- my first batch I've ever dumped.  It was a hefeweizen I barely knew.  I'm not sure exactly what happened- the symptom was a plastic-y taste that I believe was due to an overabundance of phenols.  I've read about this flaw and I have a number of theories about why this happened: a PET carboy with some brush scratches perhaps leading to sanitation problems, insufficiently rinsed bleach, lower than desired fermentation temps, and possibly even over extraction from the grains...    sigh.

'09 First Coast Cup award winning brew

E-mail Print PDF

I entered a number of beers in this year's First Coast Cup hosted by the CASK in Jacksonville, FL.  One these beers was my partial mash schwarzbier recipe, which IMHO (and the opinions of the judges at the Hogtown Brew-off) was too thick for a schwarzbier.  So I entered this brew in two separate categories - schwarzbier and porter.  I was pleasantly surprised to get the results- this beer won twice.  It was awarded the gold in the dark lager category as a schwarzbier, and it was also awarded a bronze in the porter category!

'09 Hurricane Blowoff award winning brews

I entered three of my brews in the Palm Beach Draughtsmen's annual Hurricane Blowoff homebrew competition.  Two of my entries managed to take 3rd place in their respective categories.  The award winning brews were my Dunkelweiss and my Belgian Tripel.  Needless to say I'm very pleased with hitting on two of three entries in my first competition.  Now I'm looking forward to my local brew club's upcoming competition, the Hogtown Brew Off

First all grain batch

E-mail Print PDF

Last weekend I brewed my first all-grain batch.  I'm pretty pleased with how my equipment performed though my efficiency was a lot lower than I'd like.  Oh well.  I intend to blog about the recipe, the equipment, and the process in the near future.  I think doing one's first all-grain batch is something of a milestone for any brewer- I know it is for me.  I can't wait to taste the results and revel in this accomplishment.  While all grain was a good amount of extra time invested in the batch it wasn't as bad as I thought.  I'm eager to brew this way again!  While I'm excited about this new aspect of my brewing repertory I don't think I'll go all-grain exclusively as I've had such pleasing results with partial-mash.

Cheers!

More recipes to come soon in the brewlog

I guess this is a bit meta, but I've been pretty busy lately.  Since brewing the mead I've brewed three more batches of beer- a Dunkelweiss (dark wheat), a Schwarzbier (black lager), and a coffee porter.  Oh well, I've been so busy with brewing that I've fallen behind on the blog.  I'll catch up soon.
